May I Stare At You?

This is a research based blog into how staring works, spectacle, what is real, what different kinds of real can there be. Are you real? Really? Are you more real if you stare? Are you more real if people stare at you?
Today I was followed on Twitter by someone with the handle @oldfatchick. The twitter handle description is: I’m a gigantic, wet, underemployed, jaundiced eyeball. I’m watching all of you.
Naturally, this fascinates me, and I had to think about how, in social media, we are both always watching and always yearning to be watched. Is shame losing its credibility in the age of technology? Can a book like Georges Bataille’s The Story of The Eye still have an effect on the nerves of the reader?
Huh. I just went up to my library to find my copy so I could quote from it, but it looks like one of my teenage sons must have found it first.
